The Amphitheater of Capua Vettere (page 2 of 3)

Tunnels under the amphitheater

It is interesting to explore this ancient stadium.  It is so enjoyable, in part, due to the fact that it is not over run with tourists.  You get the feeling that you have the place all to yourself.

There is an extensive network of tunnels below the stadium floor.  The tunnels are littered with fragments of the great ornaments which once adorned the amphitheater.

The curving tunnel above, on the right, is located beneath the seating area.

Looking down the length of the center channel

(left) This picture shows the view from "mid-field" looking down the center channel.

In the lower left you can see one of the curving passage ways beneath the seating area.  Notice the rectangular openings which let the sunlight in to illuminate the corridor.

Below you see the curving channel that makes its way around the outside of the arena floor.

Skylights were used to light the dark tunnels
