The town of Nicolosi was never actually in danger.  However, one would not know that by looking at these pictures.  

It is fortunate that the lava flow that was approaching the town was not sufficient in volume or viscosity.  The town is situated approximately 12 km from the volcanic vent emitting the lava; this distance combined with the gentle slope leading up to the town allowed the lava to cool enough to slow its advance. 

The town was not touched by the pyroclastic flow.
