As Americans
we like to think of the USA as the Melting Pot, but to let
the truth be told, Italy is the original Melting Pot. That
kind of thing has been going on here for centuries, if not millennia.
Jutting out into
the Mediterranean ocean, Italy has a very central location. People
have come to the peninsula from all over. They have come from the
Africa to the south. They have come from the Middle East. They have
come from the many different European nations to the north. Italy's
central location has made it a logical hub for trade since Roman times.
(even earlier some would say) Additionally, It's central location
has made it a desirable military location.

Over the centuries,
naturally, some intermingling of the many different peoples has taken place.
Evidence of this can be seen in many different forms. It is witnessed
not only in the architecture of the buildings and the various dialects
that are spoken in the different regions, but also in the faces of the
people that you meet as you attend to your business each and every day.
This is one of the primary
contributing factors in the evolution of the rich history and culture of
Italy. America is not the only Melting Pot in the world. |
