The Casamari Abbey:  Artistic Details

Non Standard Capital for an Arabesque styled column at the cloister of the Casamari Abbey, Italy.

The capital with a face is unique.  You will find only one capital like it around the cloister.

Here you can see a blending of  Arabesque and classical styles.  In pure Arabesque architecture using images of people or animals is strictly prohibited.

This type of design is typical of 11th century Italian architecture.

Stunning 17th century stained glass work in the Antico Dispensarium of the Casamari Abbey, Italy.       As you walk around the cloister, you will find several doorways. As I passed through the portal to the Antico Dispensarium I was greeted by three beautiful stained glass windows.

The the square room was dark allowing the daylight to illuminate these windows.  It was breathtaking as the stained sunlight met my eyes not only directly, but also as a shimmering reflection on the polished marble floor.
